In 2011, Italy joined a small group of nations that passed quota laws to increase the number of women on corporate boards. This is coupled with the mounting interest of the European Commission to enact similar laws across all Member States. This is particularly relevant as it will be argued in this paper that without pressure from the European Union, Italy’s quota law will have little impact. To support this argument, a number of different streams of literature will be discussed: Women on Boards, corporate governance, and the scholarship on electoral gender quotas. The paper concludes with several testable propositions to guide future empirical research on Women on Boards with respect to Italy’s quota laws.
